A young couple in a paddle boat vanish on the nearby lake and livestock begins disappearing.

Geologist Takashi Ashizawa (Tsunehiko Watase) investigates but has barely begun when an earthquake rocks the area. In the prologue, a young woman falls into a cave in the Sea of Trees area near Mount Fuji and finds herself in an icy cave full of large eggs, one of which starts t hatch. Many years later when I finally got to see Junji Kurata’s Kyoryu Kaicho no Densetsu/Legend of Dinosaurs and Monster Birds it turns out the film was certainly very eccentric. The shot seemed both eccentric and exciting. Similarly, interest in another Japanese film was piqued by another still, possibly in Greg Shoemaker’s excellent fanzine Japanese Fantasy Film Journal, a shot of a young woman being menaced by a giant monsters head rising from the water behind her. The plot generally follows the lost world formula, nothing too crazy well maybe except for that ridiculous ending.In my review of Teruo Ishii’s Kyôfu kikei ningen: Edogawa Rampo zenshû/Horrors of Malformed Men (1969) I mentioned that my interest in the film was initially piqued by a still spotted in Denis Gifford’s book A Pictorial History of the Horror Movie.

The human characters are forgettable, aside from the semi jackass lead the rest were simply numbers to the usual giant monster equation. The title is also atrocious, I'm sure they had better creative copywriters who could've come up with better sh*t. Maybe that was too far of a reach since after all this isn't as well known as like the Godzilla franchise, and none of the monsters had any real identities which leaves them merely as creatures and less as characters. There's this visual anxiety that comes over the screen when a monster attack happens, I can see this being an inspiration for creators like Spike Jonze or even Tarantino himself.

The practical effects do look a bit silly but I'm sure that was the best they could do at the time, and at least the performances added some value with everything always being a tad overdramatic. It's like a music video starts busting out and the angles get all wild like its a Tarantino film. A hidden gem for the giant monster category and one that actually for the most part delivers an entertaining set of events, and it honestly comes from the groovy style of editing everytime something happens.
